Lenovo Thinkpad T500, Windows7, Intel Core Duo P8400 @ 2.27 GHz, 2GB ram, 120GB hard drive. Would need to buy a charger. I just need something cheap to keep me entertained while away for work.

No. What are you hoping to do with it?

See what you can buy for 120$. If that’s a better laptop then it isn’t a good buy. Budget 40-60$ for a charger. Also prepare to buy a battery.
Fwiw I buy refurbished laptops exclusively and have had no issues. I buy refurbished gaming laptops, to be exact. Well under a grand while being able to handle moderate gaming no sweat. A refurbished media laptop would be amazing for under 300$. I'd spend the extra buck and do that. You'll have a better experience for longer that way.

If by entertained you mean “constantly waiting for shit to load” you’ll be beguiled giddy.
Seriously though, probably depends on how much a charger is gonna run you and whether it needs a battery or not.

If you upgraded the RAM (say 4GB?) and put Linux on it (which would run better than Win7), it would be completely fine for basic stuff like Netflix and web surfing, etc.
Mom’s laptop is a Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM running Linux Mint 18.3 MATE and, short of gaming it does everything else just fine for normal everyday stuff....Netflix, web surfing, video chat, etc, etc.

Yeah I think that would be pretty easy to do for sure. Maybe go SSD too if it turns out to bad. I like Linux but would like iTunes and I haven’ t found anything on Linux that works like it.

The used market here is super limited. Seems like people run them til they die.
There is a Thinkpad with an i5, 6b ram, W7, and 750GB drive for 100 but the guys hasnt got back to me in 5 days so think its gone.

Seems the battery is ok, will likely be close to power all the time. Charger is looking like 30 bucks shipped

If the pickings are that slim locally, do you have time to buy from ebay or similar online used pc retailer? If so, I’d probably shop around a bit more.
If not, it’ll be usable on Windows 7, albeit very slow. Maxing out the ram and adding a ssd will help quite a bit, though that is added investment, so you’ll have to weigh how much it’s worth to you.
I mostly use Android devices, but my desktop is a dual core xeon @ 3.0ghz, 4 gigs of ram, geforce 560, 1tb 7200rpm drive, on Windows 10, and it’s been a pig since the spectre patch went out a while back. Plan on maxing the ram an d adding an ssd eventually, but if that’s m y experience I suspect that laptop might be painful to use as-is... Though windows 7 or Linux could certainly make an appreciable difference.

I can’t stand iTunes, but I use a player called Clementine on my Linux laptop for my big MP3 collection. ..I quite like it!
I use Clementine on my Win10 desktop as well.

I think if I were you I’d just shop around for a used Chromebook. You could easily get one for under $100 and it’d probably be much faster and come with a charger and OK battery.

Anything you need to install software for? e.g. would a Chromebook work?

In the $9
0-100
range, I think you may be better off with an iPad with a keyboard if you're married to iTunes. Just about anything in that price range running Windows is going to crawl. Which leaves you with Chromebooks or Linux.

Seconding eBay. CoreDuo is just too old when there's decent Chromebooks that can be had at that price point.

Yeah, Chromebook unless he really can't live without iTunes (and even then...).

Yeah, those old ThinkPads are a beast. Mine is still running like a champ and I was able to join a LAN party with it sometime last year. Do note that the WiFi cards are flaky on 10 since they’re no longer supported.
A legit battery isn’t too expensive, but the battery life is crap. I replaced my T400's battery and it lasts about 3 hours on WiFi.
Throw in a SSD and a bit more RAM and it’ll do alright. ThinkPads are user-serviceable unlike many other laptops.
